After Graduation in Spain: The Job-Search Permit, Moving to a Work Permit, and Salaries

Graduates of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate (EQF level 6 or above) can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business. The law sets a maximum of 24 months, applied for from 60 days before to 90 days after your student stay ends. A job offer then lets you move to a work permit.

From studies to work

When you get a contract, you apply to change to a residence and work permit as an employee, or to self-employment. The 2025 regulation made this change easier for students; the employer does not need to prove that no local candidate is available.

Salaries

Graduate starting salaries in Spain are modest by Western European standards, about €18,000–28,000 a year, higher in consulting, finance and tech in Madrid and Barcelona. The legal minimum for 2026 is €17,094 a year.

Common questions: After graduation in Spain

How long is the job-search permit in Spain?

Additional Provision 17 of Law 14/2013, as consolidated in the BOE, sets up to 24 months and says it cannot be extended. Some guides still speak of 12 months plus an extension; the BOE text is what applies.

Do I need Spanish to get a job in Spain?

Outside international companies, yes. Spanish at B2 or above is the most common condition for graduate jobs.
