Apostille and Sworn Spanish Translation of Indian Documents: What Spain Asks For

India and Spain are both in the Hague Apostille Convention, so Indian public documents need an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs, not embassy legalisation. Spanish public bodies then want a sworn translation (traducción jurada) into Spanish.

Order of steps

  1. Get the document attested by the state or the issuing board where MEA requires it.
  2. Apply for the MEA apostille, usually through an authorised outsourcing agency.
  3. Have the apostilled document translated by a sworn translator.

Start two to three months before the visa appointment: police clearance from the Regional Passport Office alone can take weeks.

Common questions: Apostille for Spain

Who can do a sworn Spanish translation?

A sworn translator (traductor jurado) appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who may work from Spain or India; the consulate also lists accepted translators.

Do universities need apostilled documents?

For a master's application, most accept plain scans. At enrolment and for homologación, you need apostilled originals and translations.
