Coming to Spain to Learn Spanish: What the 2025 Rules Mean for a Language Student

A language year can be the bridge to a Spanish degree, but plan it as a one-off: you get one stay, one extension at most, and no automatic right to work. Apply from India, choose an accredited school, and aim for a DELE diploma, which is what the extension rules ask for.

A plan that works

  1. Pick an intensive in-person course at a Cervantes-accredited school or a university language centre.
  2. Apply for the visa in India at least two months before the start.
  3. Register for DELE during the course; it is your ticket to the one extension.
  4. Apply to master's or bachelor's while studying; switch to a higher-education stay once admitted.

The legal rules are on language course visa.

Common questions: Language student visa

Can I move from a language course to a degree in Spain?

Yes. Once admitted to a higher-education programme, you can apply from inside Spain for a study stay for higher education, which also brings the 30-hour work right.
